Our trip up the mountainside to Mt St Helen was just as terrifying to me as the road up toward Mt Rainier. It was beautiful on the way up about half-way and then one could start to see the devastation still present after nearly 35 years ago!
We took a day trip to Mount Rainier (no fires in Rainier) at Sunrise Peak. It was beautiful, but the roads are terrifying. The roads were in better shape than I expected (paved and reasonably repaired), but narrow and there are steep cliffs with no shoulders and no guard rails. They have lots of mountainous S curves and switchbacks and steep inclines and then there are the down hills at 6% grade! I was a nervous wreck.
Once we got to the 6000 foot summit of Sunrise Peak (the highest point accessible by car), it was breath taking! We took a picnic and enjoyed the view of the higher mountain. Then, the downhill ride to return started….. We did see elk and deer with antlers on the back way down the mountain. We did get one photo. It happened so quickly and the road was too narrow and curvy to stop for a photo shoot.
